Livestock Insurance Scheme in North Kenya

Posted on January 25, 2010

I think this is a very important initiative and if made to work for the pastoralists, I believe it will go along way to help a lot of them. In brief, “The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) says satellite imagery will be used to monitor the landscape – if the images show a lack of pasture then it will be assumed the animals are likely to die and the owners can receive a pay-out” (BBC). It will require a lot of dedication, good management and mobilization of the pastoralists for the benefits to take hold. Kudos to Dr. Kuti, ILRI and Equity Bank and I really hope that this scheme comes to fruition.
