M-PESA: Kenya's best invention of the last decade?

Posted on December 29, 2009

If you have used M-PESA (M for Mobile, Pesa is Kiswahili for Money ), you would agree with me if I said that it is one of the most important invention of the last decade for Kenyans. Few other services have touched and transformed the lives of many ordinary Kenyans as M-PESA has. Now folks don’t have to worry about carrying huge sums of money while travelling and in the process risk the wrath of highways bandits. They would simply deposit their money into their M-PESA accounts and withdraw it from anywhere withing the confines of Kenya. The crude methods of sending money to friends and relatives, like giving it to a trusted someone who turns out to be not so trustworthy, are thankfully a thing of the past. At the same time, many people can now tell commercial banks to screw themselves and there blotted bank accounts as they happily store their money with M-PESA , even if for no interest earned.

With over 6 million Kenyan subscribers, I believe that M-PESA and Safaricom are worthy of every penny they make out of this service.
